Blank or dated calendar: which to use

A dated calendar has the numbers and holidays already in place, which saves time when you only need the coming month. For January 2027, the printable January 2027 calendar is ready to print with every date filled in.

An undated template is the better choice when you want to reuse the same sheet, plan a year further ahead, design your own layout or teach children how a month is numbered. It also works as a tracker, where the boxes matter more than the dates.

How to fill in a blank January calendar

  1. Find the weekday of January 1. The home page shows the January 2027 calendar, and the year list below links to every January from 2020 to 2040.
  2. Write 1 in the first-row box under that weekday, then number the boxes left to right, row by row, up to 31.
  3. Plan for 5 or 6 rows. January always has 31 days, so it needs 5 rows unless it starts late in the week: on a Sunday-start grid, 6 rows when January 1 is a Friday or Saturday; on a Monday-start grid, 6 rows when it is a Saturday or Sunday.
  4. Add fixed dates such as New Year's Day on January 1, then floating ones: Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the third Monday, between January 15 and 21. The January holidays page lists the rest.
  5. Finish with your own dates: birthdays, school terms, bill due dates and appointments.

A numbered January can be reused. Any year whose January 1 falls on the same weekday has an identical January layout, and leap years make no difference because February 29 comes after January.

Ideas for blank January calendars

  • Reusable planner: laminate a template or slip it into a clear sheet protector, write with dry-erase markers and wipe it clean for the next month or year.
  • Learning dates: children who write in the numbers themselves practice counting, the order of the days of the week and reading a calendar.
  • Habit tracker: number the boxes and mark each day you keep a habit, such as a Dry January challenge.
  • Shared schedules: fill in shifts, chores or custody days for a household or team.
  • Project planning: use the notes version to map out deadlines for school projects or work plans.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a January calendar for any year?

Find the weekday of January 1 for that year, write 1 under that day in the first row, and number the boxes in order up to 31. A blank template saves drawing the grid by hand.

How many rows does a January calendar need?

A January calendar needs 5 or 6 rows. A sixth row is needed when the month starts on a Friday or Saturday on a Sunday-start grid, or on a Saturday or Sunday on a Monday-start grid.

Can I reuse a January calendar from a previous year?

Yes, if January 1 falls on the same weekday in both years. January always has 31 days, so its layout depends only on the starting weekday, not on whether the year is a leap year.

Should a blank calendar start on Sunday or Monday?

Sunday is the usual first day on US calendars, while the UK, most of Europe and Australia generally start the week on Monday. Pick the version that matches the other calendars you use.

Are the blank January templates free?

Yes. The blank templates are free to print for personal, classroom and office use.
